Because of the short lay off and back to back games to open the Stanley Cup Finals, the Detroit Red Wings were supposed to be at a terrible disadvantage.

Patrick Roy turns down the Avalanche coaching job
Roy turned down the job for "family reasons." Fair enough. He also said that the offer was "very interesting", meaning I'm sure that it was worth a boat load of dough.
The Avalanche, by the way, still employ a head coach. His name is Tony Granato. Just like that, we find ourselves in the Conference Finals in the NHL Playoffs.  What an unreal first two rounds this year.  Rivalries, storylines coming out of everywhere, and most notably, some GREAT hockey.  What a time to be alive.

Is this the year Joe Thornton and the Sharks finally get over the hump? Maybe Ron Wilson was the problem. Maybe not.

The Ducks finished the season strong, but have goaltending issues. Its very likely that J.S. Giguere will at least start the playoffs on the bench. One thing that San Jose doesn't have... is goaltending issues.  Complete reversal of last year's series. This time the Big Bad Bruins are the heavy favourites. The Habs over-acheieved last year, thats easy to see now. They were lucky to even get into the playoffs. Carey Price is a headcase. I could go on and on about how the Habs should lose. They'll win one at home.

And that somebody was Tampa Bay Buccaneer's co-chairman Joel Glazer.  Gruden was let go today as head coach of the Bucs, after the team missed the playoffs for the fourth time in six years since winning the Super Bowl in 2002.

After a 9-3 start this season, the Bucs tanked, especially in Decemeber, losing their last four games to miss out on post-season play.

Canada completes another dominating World Junior Hockey Championship with a 5-1 drubbing of Sweden. I know, I know, Takarski stood on his head throughout the game, and it was much closer than the score would indicate (2 empty netters), but really, was there ever any doubt?

What a difference two seasons makes.

In what can only be described as a stunning turn of events, Detroit may have to relinquish the Stanley Cup and hand it off to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A coalition consisting of teams from Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto have petitioned NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to remove the 2007-2008 cup from Detroit.

We are just over 24 hours into Major League Baseball's free agent frenzy, and the first move has been made by (surprise!) the New York Yankees.

Apparently the Yanks have offered rotund lefty C.C. Sabathia a six-year deal worth over $137.5 million, more than Johan Santana got last year from the Mets.  The deal would obviously make the portly fellow the highest paid pitcher in baseball history.

The little kid is of course San Francisco Giants phenom Tim Lincecum.

Not really much of a surprise, he had my vote (if I had one.  Surprisingly, I do not).

Lincecum was 18-5 for the horrible Giants, with an MLB leading 265 strikeouts.  He also posted a second-best N.L earned run average of 2.62.  Opponents hit just .221 against him.

Matt Holliday is apparently on the move to the Oakland Athletics, in a deal that apparently will see closer Huston Street head to the Coors Light State.

This is a bit of surprise. Turns out James Shields is money.  He pitched the Rays to victory tonight over the Phils, who really really need Ryan Howard to stop hitting ground balls into the death shift.

Turns out we now know who he is.  He is Syd Davy, better known to Minnesota Vikings fans at 100 Percent Cheese Free.  Whatever that means.  He has a Packers tattoo on his arm, so whatever.  I'm not one to judge nicknames' validity.

If you caught the Caps and Flames game last night, you witnessed the hit of the year so far.  The Caps Tyler Sloan, on his first shift in the NHL, absolutely obliterated Daymond Langkow.  Rene Bourque came in and tried to pummel Sloan afterwards, and got 9 minutes worth of penalties.  The Caps didn't score on that 9 min. PP.  Weak.
